How to set up HP SA P400 Raid Controller under ESXi to ...

Hi,
How should I set up ESXi on a HP SA P400 Raid controller so I get a notification if a HD drive fails or at least I can check through the Infrastructure client?

TIA

Tom

HP has a pre-built ESXi CD (both 3.5 and 4.0 versions) that has all of this functionality built into it that you can download from the HP support site.  That is what I used.   Then ESXi is aware of the configuration & health of the logical & physical disks.   Just go to the HP computer model's area in the downloads section and look for the pre-built ESXi images.  These images also include ESXi-specific network drivers and additional patches/enhancements to make an install on a HP server a no-brainer.

Hi dlethe, I have tried but can't find it - would you have a link? TIA, Tom

Here is a link to all the pre-built ESXi 4.0 install images.  It is labeled for the DL380, but I noticed it has drivers for other controllers, so may work for all the HP machines.  I don't know. YOu didn't post what model you have, but using link below as a starting point, you can probably search again for your particular machine.  Search for the HP server model, not the controller model.

If you use Insight Manager for notifications let me know if the hard disk status shows up. Previously HP said they hadn't bothered with the disk status as ESXi was meant to be on a SD flash card or USB stick. They kind of forgot that they bought LeftHand so you can make iSCSI targets with internal disks on ESXi.

Hi dlethe, hanks for the reply with the link. I had a look but I am not confident what to do here. Assume I have a DL380G5 with a P400, clean HDDs, and want to install ESXi on it, what do I need to download and install? TIA, Tom

DavidPresidentCommented:
Just download and burn the ISO and boot to it, but there are release notes on the ISO / installation guide.  It is very painless, you can probably just go without reading and take the defaults.  Also take time out to look at the DL380 G5 page and download the ISO that lets you update all the firmware for motherboard, LILO, controller(s), etc..   You need certain minimum revision levels for ESX4i.

Thanks dlethe, my only problem left is that when I go the link you provided none of the downloads look to me as an ESXi installer ISO. Sorry for being pest, but can you tell me which download should I take and I promise I will leave you alone :-)
TIA,
Tom

Here is a nice simple installation guide that walks you through it.

I found this link where they have a full ISO (pre-built for with all drivers for HP servers).  Heck, they will even send you the CD set for free.  You will have to register/logon to get it.  The build is also V4.0 U1. Great deal.

So have you managed to get it to notify you of hard disk failures?
