Citrix Farm upgrade from PS4 to XenApp

Hi

We have got 20 servers running on PS4.0 on Windows 2003 Server in the citrix farm.

Citrix IMA database server is running on Windows 2000 with SQL 2000.

We are eligable and have license of XenApp and need to upgrade our whole citrix farm to XenApp.

Are there any detail steps guide or documentation which tells me everything including any prior measures etc.

I guess this has not just involve upgrading each Citrix server in the farm but there will be some way of upgrading IMA database as well?

Any detail help will be much appritiated. thanks

Which XenApp version are you upgrading to?

XenApp 5 for Server 2003
XenApp 5 Feature Pack 2 for Server 2003
XenApp 5 Feature Pack 3 for Server 2003
XenApp 5 for Server 2008
XenApp 6 for Server 2008 R2

Are you going from x86 or x64 to x86 or x64?

I guess XenApp 5 for Server 2003, but what is the XenApp 5 Feature Pack2 and Feature Pack 3 if they are better than just XenApp 5 then should we upgrade to them. I mean what is the difference? Are the just service packs of XenApp?
Also, are you currently running 32-bit or 64-bit?  For the new version, 32-bit or 64-bit?
I am little bit confused here between FP2 and FP3, i guess FP3 is newer version of FP2 so probably we should go for FP3 as it might have more fixes than FP2? or you think FP2 is better?

32-bit
FP3 just came out 2 days ago (March 24, 2010).  As a Citrix Bigot I always go for the latest and greatest.

I will adding articles for FP3 soon.  http://www.dabcc.com/Webster
Is citrix 4.5 same name of Xenapp as well?
Ah.ic probably FP3 is not tested for a while in the market yet.
do you have step-by-step upgrade guide from PS4.0 to XenApp 5 FP2 on your site?
PS 4.5 is the same as XenApp 5 for Server 2003

FP2 hasn't been on the market long either.
No, I can no longer get access to 4.0 media or download files.
As part of upgrade of each citrix server, how do we upgrade IMA database site? And is there any way to do automatic upgrade of 20 servers or does it have to do manually by logging on each server?
What version of SQL Server will you be moving to?

You could do a SQL DROP and ATTACH from the old to the new SQL Server.

To be safe, I would recommend a test farm to test out all the new stuff.  The Web Interface is different, the mgmt consoles are different, the client software is different, etc.
Can we keep SQL server side on the same version 2000 as now or should we move to SQL 2005?

I just checked our license server and it showing subscription Advantage Date of 1-11-2009 with the Red cross as below:

Citrix XenApp (Presentation Server) Platinium   1-11-2009

Does it mean we are not licensed to XenApp then?

Means you can only DL and use products released before then.  That should be XenApp 5 or XenApp 5 FP2 for 2003.

Supported Databases: http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX114501
According to CTX114501, SQL 2000 is supported for XA5/2003.
Thats good atleast we can install FP2 oh but you said FP2 not long enough in the market so you might just can intall XenApp5 for 2003.

I will certainly go through the technical document you forwarded me but can i ask that is there any seperate installation for SQL side upgrade or do i have to it some different way?
I guess all these links talk about the migrate to new SQL server, what about if we dont want any upgrade or migrate on SQL side, do we still need to do anything with data store, can we just upgrade the farm via just upgrading all member servers from PS4.0 to XenApp5?
There is not much that changes in the Data Store until you install HRP05 for XA5.

Remember this - as soon as ONE server is upgraded or migrated to XA5 in the existing farm, ALL farm mgmt duties MUST be done on that one server.  Attempting any farm mgmt duties on a non upgraded or migrated server may risk destroying the data store!!!

That is why I recommended a seprate farm for your testing.
What is the normal practice of people doing upgrade of citrix farm contain 20 servers, does it has to be manual process on 20 servers and upgrade from PS4.0 to XenApp5.0 or is there automatic technique? otherwise i have to logon to each server and do it i guess?
