how to enable jdk for firefox on RHEL 5u3_64

In the past I have been able to enable the jdk plugin for firefox by doing:
ln -s /usr/java/latest/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/ /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/

On this new box when i install jdk6.14 the /usr/java/latest/jre/plugin directory does not have the i386 sub directory or any reference to

Where is and/or how do I install the jdk plugin for firefox?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

After installation of jdk, do this:

alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /usr/java/latest/bin/java 99
alternatives --config java
rm /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/
alternatives --install /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/ /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_14/jre/lib/amd64/ 99
alternatives --config

Restart firefox and in about:config check that
java.java_plugin_library_name is javaplugin

Works for me
