IBM Ds4400 Firmware Update

We have one IBM Ds4400 controller with 7 expansion enclosures. I want to do firmware update of this 4800 conttroller and enclosures as controller, enclosure, disks ...etc.

Now I need 3 answers,

1. Which firmware updates i must do on the this systems? I think I must do controller, enclosure, disks. Which else firmware updates i must do on the this systems?

2. What is the order during firmware update? Which firmware update must be firstly? What is the order?

3. Which backups i must get before I start firmware update?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You should do all Updates.

Update in order - Storage Manager > Disk > Enclosure > Controller

There isn't anything you would need to backup prior to completing these firmware upgrades and they don't take but a few minutes.

Let me add read release notes.  I can't cite an example specific to the DS4400, but it is not unheard of that a particular controller or disk firmware update will cause data loss (meaning you would have to perform a full backup first).

@ dlethe - Good add!

@ yozuzeybek - Yes, do do do read the release notes! Though I have never had a data worry during upgrades with any of the DS series I have worked with (4's and 5's), it is surely possible.

A few pionts for the preparation

1) Stop all IO to storage subsystem prior to firmware upgrade, ie. if there is any hosts connected to it, shut them down first.

2) Save SAN configuration

In the Subsystem Management window select menu item Storage Subsystem followed by sub menu item Configuration followed by sub menu item Save.

3) Next save the profile.

Select Menu item View in the Subsystem Management window followed by sub menu item Storage Subsystem Profile.
Click Save As and save the profile.

4) Should consider to upgrade SAN switches firmware as well.
