asked on
energy of hydrogen 1s and carbon 2s/2p
Hi
I've been trying to find out if the hydrogren 1s orbital has lower or higher energy than carbon 2s and 2p. If anyone can find an energy level diagram with this on it would be much appreciated as I can't find one. I'm guessing carbon orbitals will be lower but I would like to see an energy level diagram
Many thanks

Oops, you want C not He...
This is the best I can find:
http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/HBASE/Atomic/carbon.html#c1
Evidently, C (2p) > H (1s), but it does not show C (2s)...

Thanks very much for that. It would be great to see 2s as well though!

in fact, in a perfect world it would be great to see how the carbon hybrid orbitals compare too but these diagrams are hard to find
You can find the energy levels of any electron by looking at the appropriate x-ray absorption levels. I do not have them memorized but will give values shortly
