If you are not or not planning to use a 3rd Party Backup Application, you are still safe, You can use the built-in Windows Server Backup Role to Backup your Entire Server or just the System State (Active Directory).

The technet link above have a good set of instructions to get you up and running, it also provides instructions on how to recover your domain controller via windows server backup.

You would have to use a external storage (USB / Firewire) to backup your server via WSB.

In Addition, if you are budgeted or not yet ready to get a 3rd party Backup Application, you can also :

This is not a Backup Solution but sometimes is safe and comes in handy if you have any additional servers or test machines which are 64BIT and are Hyper-V Capable.

use a program called Disk2VHD (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/ee656415.aspx)

This utility will convert an online windows 2008 machine into a VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) file and can be connected to Hyper-V to test or restore.
Although you can take backup of system state but i think making an additional Domain Controller is even better because you have one live backup system rather than restoring system state and make it authoritative.
