"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

VLC Media Player will play DVD's including their surround sound audio if you have the right equipment, and it's open source, so no cost to you.

It's not a straight DVD decoder (can't play in anything BUT VLC) but if all you want is to watch it, it works quite well.

"The cross-platform open-source multimedia framework, player and server

VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player and multimedia framework capable of reading most audio and video formats (MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, DivX, MPEG-1, mp3, ogg, aac ...) as well as DVDs, Audio CDs VCDs, and various streaming protocols. See the full features list.
It can also be used as a media converter or a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on networks."

supports and blueraven07,

I have installed both of these, but I am still unable to use Windows Media Player to watch DVD's in my Server 2008 operating system.

VLC will only play DVD's within itself (Not in WMP). Writing a DVD decoder requires a lot of royalties and licensing charges, which is why there are no free plugins floating around the net.

This article explains it pretty well, and gives you some ideas of where to buy (sucks I know) software to get WMP working.
