Installed Sql server 2008, but management studio missing.

I have installed sql server 2008 express edition from the following location :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=58ce885d-508b-45c8-9fd3-118edd8e6fff&displaylang=en

File :: SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe

But I get only "Configuration Tools" and "Import and Export Data" items under the Start Menu.

Do I need to install management studio separately ?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Yes. Management Studio isn't part of the Express install, but it can be downloaded as a seperate package here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=08E52AC2-1D62-45F6-9A4A-4B76A8564A2B&displaylang=en

Hi, whilst your at the basic install stage, consider installing 2008 express with advanced tools. if you want to do any reporting using ssrs you would need this one, has a few extra bits as well which are described on the page

Hi there,

Although you might have got some of the answers I would like to mention some of the things.
First of all, Yes, you have to install SSMS seperately available at the following link

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=C243A5AE-4BD1-4E3D-94B8-5A0F62BF7796&displaylang=en

While installing SQL Server express you might come across many problems, such as MSXML6.0 error, which was installed as a part of the update to the system. If you get this error please uninstall MSSML6.0 and then try to install again.

So, as you know, you can install SQL server by using command line options for various needs, which can include network options, SQL Browser, type of installation etc.. If you need more info on this please do let me know.
To run the SQL installation with Basic screens, try using SQLEXP32**.EXE /qb
To run the SQL installation with no screen, which is quiet mode, try using SQLEXP32**.EXE /qn
With the basic at least you come to know the errors visually.

One more thing to remember,
Once you install SQL express, and SSMS, you will have the SQLCMD utility(where you can run all the commands, which also provides DAC-Dedicated Administration Connection) that comes with that. If you miss that you can download that from the following location.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=d09c1d60-a13c-4479-9b91-9e8b9d835cdc&displaylang=en

If you are planning to use FULL TEXT SEARCH, you don't get that option . So please if you need that feature, please download the advanced SQL express installation file from the following link.

Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 Express with Advanced Services
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=B5D1B8C3-FDA5-4508-B0D0-1311D670E336&displaylang=en

Other System Requirements

•Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1.
•Windows Installer 4.5.

Please do contact me for further help.

Bye for now

Cheers
