Microsoft Project Task Start Date

I have Tasks that won't let me change their start date no matter what i do.  Any ideas?

Hello beaconlightboy,

check the tasks for

- fixed duration
- fixed end date
- dependency on predecessors

Anything there?

cheers, teylyn

how are you changing the dates? Typing a new date in the start or finish field may fail if:
- the task has a constraint: double click the task, select the "Advanced" tab and make sure that the "Constraint Type" is set to "As soon as possible"
- the task has a predecessor: select the "Predecessor" tab and check if there are any tasks shown. If you NEED these predessors for the logical sequence of the tasks, keep them. However the latest finish of ALL predecessors will drive the task's start date

I have tried to change the date a couple ways.
1. Double clicking the task in the gnatt view and changing the constraint type to start no earlier than x date and then setting the date.  This works for some but not all.  I have tried setting the constraint type to as soon as possible and this doesn't let me do it.

None of the tasks have predeccessors at this point.  when viewing the gnatt view the option to change the date is greyed out on the row item.  but only on some tasks.  A majority of the issues, but not all, are with the root tasks.

Hard to tell without seeing what you have in place. Can you post a sample file? Reduce to a few rows of data/tasks, just sufficient to illustrate the issue.

I have attahced a word doc with a screen shot.  Notice line 2.  PHASE 1.  i cannot change the start date from 8/10/2009.  Nor can i change the start date on the two tasks below which i have completed.  I just want to change the date for proper timeline display.  The other 3 cycles i can change the dates on.  But if you go to inventory and tag equipment, i cannot change that start date, but the dates underneath i can.  i don't get it.

A Word doc with a screen shot does nothing to help find out how your tasks and dependencies are set up.

Line 2 is not a task, it's a summary row for a set of tasks.

The start date and duration of that row are calculated from the items that are defined nested inside that summary.

I feel you need a good look at the MS Project tutorial files to learn how to use MS Project and understand the  basic concepts of setting up a project.

Of this i am sure teylyn.

I found the error.  One of the child tasks way down was set to a bad date.   sigh..
