How to get SQL 2008 to install when SQL Express 2005 is installed.

I am trying to install SQL 2008 SBS on a 2008 server.  The installation fails during the "Installation Rules" section due to SQL Server 2005 Express Tools.  I am sure that SQL was either installed for either Trend Micro Worry Free Security and/or Acronis.  I think both of those software packages use SQL Express.  I do not want to uninstall SQL Server Express 2005 if that is going to have adverse effects on either of those installed programs.  Does anyone know a way around this.  Can i just uninstall the 2005 Tools and nothing else?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. This is a very common issue because the SQL Express tools cannot coexist with the install of SQL.  I am not sure why, but I do know that I was able to uninstall the SQL Express tools and leave SQL Express on the machine and then install the SQL Server and it worked fine for me.

How did you go about just uninstalling just the tools?  It is not listed out separately in Add/Remove programs.

You should be able to choose Uninstall SQL Express and have it allow you to just uninstall the Tools.  That is the other problem with Express and Tools.

Maybe look at this and look in your registry to see if there is something in that key that may block it.

I tried to uninstall SQL Server tools via Add/Remove but the first option that I get is to remove SQL Server 2005 instance components (Acronis and Trend Micro) or to remove Workstation Components.  I do not have the option to remove the Tools

Also I looked into the link that you posted.  I do not have the registry entry that it is referring to.

You shouldn't need to uninstall SQL Server 2005. Try installing 2008 as a named instance (rather than default instance).

The workstation components are the tools as well.

I already have it as a Named Instance:  It automatically populated the name for me though MSSQLSERVER is the name.  Do I need to change that name?

DBAduck - Ben MillerPrincipal ConsultantCommented:
That is the name of a default instance. You should change it to something else.

I tried just changing it to MSQLSERVER (just took out an S) and that didn't change anything.

You shouldn't/needn't to change the name of an instance "default" or otherwise. The default instance is called "MSSQLSERVER" which was already taken by 2005, so 2008 must be installed as a named instance.
