IE8 "Open With" box appears whenever I download a file

Hi all,

Got a PC here running Vista SP2 and Internet Explorer 8.  Odd thing happening, if I download a file, lets say the latest Java build from java.com but has happened with all downloads I get the normal run/save dialog, if I select run then a box appears asking me to "Choose the program you want to use to open this file" Then under recommended programs I just have Internet Explorer.  The "Always use the selected program" is greyed out.

Anyone have any thoughts as to what my be going on?

Thanks in advance

Save the file to the desktop and use Open With. Is the Always use option available?
If yes set it up now and they should all open OK.

I have had similar issues with email attachments and they won't modify the file associations via an application's open dialogue.

Trouble is it's all files that I try to run automatically from a website. even more curiouser is that when logged on as another user it doesn't happen...

Then it might be a profile issue.
Delete the user profile on the PC after backing up items like internet favourites, desktop icons, and quick launch icons.
Then log back in and try again.

Since it isnt affecting all users look at this reg key.....

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe\OpenWithProgids

Default value should be "exefile", if present.... If not present, then this wont help you.....
