Dell Dimension 9150 memory upgrade

I have a Dell Dimension 9150 running Win 7 Ult. The machine has 4 memory slots but seems to have a 4 gig memory limit. When I installed 4 2 gig strips the bios recognizes all 8 gigs but windows wont boot.
Either pair when installed separately in slots 0 & 1 will work. The machine works fine with 4 1 gig strips.
Any suggestions ???
Thanks

Your system does indeed have a 4GB limit ... so I wouldn't expect to be able to use all 8, but what you might try is installing an x64 OS on a spare drive or dual-boot to see if it acts ok with all the memory.  If you have a 32-bit version of Windows, you will be limited to under 4GB no matter how much the computer might accept.

The problem is running 4 2gb sticks of ram stresses the memory bus and causes instability. While the chipset itself supports up to 8gb of ram in retail boards to get it to work properly you have to up the memory and chipset voltages and usually relax the memory timings. Unfortunately these options are not available in the Dell bios which is why Dell has 4Gb as the max supported ram for the system. There is no workaround that I know of, you're stuck with only being able to use 4Gb of ram.
