sharepoint discussion board sub-categories

We just upgraded to sharepoint 3.0 and have a discussion board on it. Is there away to have sub-categories within the discussion board?

Under the Settings for the Discussion Board, you can add a new column and name it category or what you like.  So when you create a new discussion that option will be available.
Then create a new view filtered by that new column.
So that in the main discussion page on the top right under view when you select that view it will only display the items that you choose for that filter under that column.
Hope that makes sense.

I was kind of hoping to get actual category "folders" and in them "sub-categories" kind of like how online forums are...

Well there is nothing saying that you can't create a discussion thread for each of your categories, then create a page, and add them as a webpart to that page displaying all of them.

Not really what I was looking for but then again...sharepoint isn't capable of doing what I would like it to do
