I want to test the performance and noise on the cable.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Simple continuity testers can be had for $10 or so. For testing cable performance, you need a tester that will cost a bare minimum of $600 US for the lowest end units  that test for certifying cable to TIA-568A/B.

A Fluke electronics makes some of the best tools on the market for this:  I consider them the gold standard.
I suggest looking into the  Fluke  CableIQ 100 Residential Qualifier at the low end (~$1000 tester), or    the  Microtest OmniScanner 2  or DTX-1800 at the high end   (~$10000 tester)

See the product pages for more details.   I think you should be fine with a residential qualifier, if all you need is to verify correctness of the cable.

CableIQ will test for cross talk, detect a large variety of faults,  provide tracing capabilities,  and  actually test the ability to deliver throughput.

Agilent also makes some good testers

Google search for  "Cable Qualifier"
Or  "cat5e certifier"
