How to recover Firefox passwords after new install?

I upgraded Firefox from v3.0.18 to v3.6.2.  I did a clean install after backing up my *.default directory.

How can i transfer/import the saved logins and passwords from my Firefox backup?  I tried replacing the signons.sqlite table but it did not work.

FYI, I have a signons3.txt file which contains the data.  See sample in code section. The password strings have been modified so they are no good.  Is this of any benefit?

The password strings in signons3.txt are not "modified", they are encrypted. You would not want them to be openly readable to anyone who'd gain access to your computer, or would you? For decrypting, the decryption key will be required which is stored in a file called key3.db.

So please copy the two files (signon3.txt and key3.db) from your old to your new profile, overwriting existing files if necessary.
This may already do the trick.

Unfortunately, starting with FF 3.5, stored passwords have been moved to signon.sql. So there is a slight chance you may still encounter a problem. In this case, reinstall your new Firefox and make sure the old signons3.txt and keys3.db already exist in the profile folder so FF installation may convert them.

Good idea. I am on FF 3.6.2, so I need to do the second solution.
