Experts,

When I scanned for viruses and malware, etc. I then had SUPERantivirus quarrante all viruses, malware, etc. Now my computer wont start up any of my programs and the taskbar tray is empty? How do I get my computer back to what it was before I ran this SUPER antivirus program?

What do you figure happened?  Can SUPERantivirus's actions be undone?

ASKER

Ive contacted their customer support via email but they wont respond until tomorrow, etc - one of those 24 hour customer service/support things with no 800 number, etc.

It was th worth situation when you scanning virus when your computer has alot of them, in my point of view, you should reinstall your Operating System and use the Data Recovery tool later to recovery your importain data before, good luck to you !. If you still have problem, recontact with me.
Okay, gotcha, thanks for letting me know... I'll wait for SUPER antivirus support to respond to my message and then go from there.

 Any other suggestions?
Hi RobWellsMc,

<What do you figure happened?>

It sounds like when you remove the infections, it took pieces of your OS with it. That sometimes happens, depending what infection(s) you were infected with.

In most cases, you'll might be best to re-install your OS, as already suggested.
Have you attempted to perform a system restore?  If that doesn't work, please try booting up into Safe Mode and scheduling a check disk on your hard drive.  You may also try the Last Known Good Configuration option from the F8 menu.  Hope this helps!
Press and hold Ctrl+Alt and type Delete. If the Task Manager comes up then got to File and select New Task. Enter explorer.exe then click Okay. Post back with the results.
edbedb posted my first solution. That's how i got the desktop back for a friend after a virus removal.
If that doesn't work, as others have suggested, do a repair install; NOT a reformat, or else you will lose your data. It's simple enough, but here is a step by step guide:

edbedb,

This is what I got when I followed your instructions, etc.   Unfortunately its not explorer.exe, but a windows Open With dialog box.  Fortunately I can open up most programs except AIM instant messenger and one or two others with this dialog box.

sb7785,

I'm still waiting to hear from SUPER antivirus support, they're very slow in responding - 24 hour response time so I still have to wait.

I'll try your suggestions for now since it doesnt require a computer restore - I'm safeguarding all my work data in the computer for now...

edbedb,

Will do, I've worked with the registry before...  Keep you posted.
By the way SUPERanitspyware gives me the option to manage my quarantine files - should I retore all those files I quaranteed?
No, I wouldn't do that.
Perfect, thanks edbedb!   That did it, now I can 'click' on any program and it'll start including AIM instant messenger.

Gonna leave ZONEALARM on from now on and leave on at all times, I don't mind it slowing down my computer a bit, etc.

That's great. I don't know if Zone Alarm would have prevented that. Avast AV would have probably caught it.
Thanks everyone, I appreciate your help - just that edbedbs solutions were right for my computers situation without doing anything drastic just yet.

Had to do the small steps first that didnt do any harm to my work/computer data, etc.
Oh yeah, I'll look into Avast AV - thansk edbedb.  I have more questions, more steps to follow but figure that requires starting a new Experts Exchange thread.....
Perfect, that did it for this particular problem my computer not starting any program at startup nor being able to activate any program once clicked.  Had to go through the 'Open With' dialog box every time - thats when I knew something was very wrong after I quaranteed all those spyware files and code, etc.
