Animated Website Favicon

Hello dear experts,

How do I create a favicon on for my website that is animated such as the one in the link below:

http://www.skysports.com/football/

This favicon is actually a GIF image. You can create your own GIF (anitmated) and set it as the site's favicon as:

<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/gif" href="/Images/myanimated.gif" />

The trick is that you first need to set a "standard" ico as favicon and then set the line above, so browsers will first use the ico and then try the gif. If the browser doesn't support the gif, it will present the ico to the user. Hence, you need the following 2 lines (in that order):

Firefox 3.6 for sure. IE8 doesn't handle this (shows the "static" ico).

But majority of people use IE8 or earlier, isn't it?

I guess that's true but still: If IE doesn't support GIFs as favicon, you can't do anything about it. For example, can you see the animation when visiting the mentioned site with IE?
