Have you checked the event logs after you try the catalog.  This normally is an indicator that there is a corruption/problem on the tape.  It is however sometimes a software problem.

Check the event logs for ntbackup entries or rss (removeable storage) entries.

Thanks for the quick reply Kruger.

Nothing in the event logs but in %userprofile%\local settings\application data\microsoft\windows NT\NT backup\data\ there are logs for every time i have tried to restore. they all say the same thing

"Catalog Status
The requested media failed to mount. The operation was aborted."

its 197GB of data on a successful backup - I'm thinking the tape might be to full???

Ok - I just put in a monthly tape that is well under 200GB and it did the same thing with the same error in the logs.

"Catalog Status
The requested media failed to mount. The operation was aborted."

so its probably not a size issue

Thanks,

I tried that link - it didn't work because its for SBS i have Server 2003 standard.

I can see the tapes in the removable storage - not many options but they are there...

In removeable storage are any tapes listed as online, are there duplicate offline tapes?  It might be that your removable storage is corrupt.  Try resetting it with the below link.

Included the following just in case it applies

Thanks Kruger,

I tried both those links - but its still not working - The hotfix didn't apply as my system is up to date. and after i reset the removable storage files i reboot and put the tape in again.

I clicked on NTbackup in wizard mode and because we reset the removable storage NTbackup propmted me to say that it has not seen this tape before and asked what i wanted to do, i selected "continue using this media" and selected restore, expanded out LTO and then i could see only one tape available, labelled "Friday (26-03-10...etc)"

then i double clicked on the tape name and it started the catalog process for about 2 minutes and then ejected the tape giving me the error message "the library is unable to load the media at this time because the media is in use" ...

Odd.  Have you got a new blank tape?  If so can you try and do a quick backup.  What about the drivers for your tape system, have they been updated, new firmware etc.?

How about trying the following.

Download and install a trial copy of backup exec.  I haven't used it in a while, but I did this in the past.  Installed backup exec and used it's media management and then was able to restore.  Windows Removeable media can be a pain.

Download, install, catalog with the below.

OK.

So I put one of the tapes from my DC into the my mail server (the one that's not working) and it catalogs the DC tapes fine!!!!!

they are both 200/400 GB LTO-2 tapes - the only difference is that the DC tapes are Sony and the mail server tapes are Maxell...

My mail server tapes don't work on either the DC or mail server both servers have "HP StorageWorks Ultrium 448" both have the latest drivers and firmware.

:( that sounds very much like a broken/corrupt tape.  You could try formatting a tape and testing a backup, but if 2 seperate boxes are having trouble reading the tapes, and a tape from another box works fine in the suspect server, then the tapes with the backup are suspect.

Sorry, wish I could help more or had better news, but it sounds like a broken/corrupt tape

But the weird thing is it is doing the same thing to all my Maxell tapes... i have tried over 10 of them and all the Sony tapes work...

I only recovered data from one of the Maxell tapes about a month ago!

HI,

I installed Backup exec and tried to catalog the tape - it failed and i got this error in Backup Exec

"0xe00084f3 - The block size being used is incorrect"

And this error in my event log

"Adamm Mover Error: Read Failure!
Error = ERROR_INVALID_BLOCK_LENGTH
Drive = "HP 1"
    {569C9068-EB43-418A-9096-71165FFBBA5F}
Media = "Seagate 2009/08/04.21:00:52"
    {7993007C-950C-40D0-BD27-5AEAAA167D11}
Read Mode: SingleBlock(0), ScsiPass(0)
Write Mode: SingleBlock(1), ScsiPass(1)"

Again - this is happening to all my maxell tapes that were previously working before the rebuild. The Sony tapes that belong to my DC work fine on both servers.

Thanks.

Ah block size, I did suspect block size may be a problem, which is what I was hoping backupexec would show.  See if the following link has anything useful.  There is a way to reset, change the block size that it expects, but it's been a long time since I've worked on tapes I can't remember exactly where.

Chances are before your first failure, when you were backing up and recovering data, you tapes were set to a specific block size, not the default values, now after the rebuild it is trying to use default values (which I think are 64K) but as the tape is formatted with a different block size, when it tries to read it, it fails.

This is good, as it means your data is likely still ok, it's a matter of sorting the block size.  Sorry for the late reply, easter weekend and all that.

And just in case this has something.

Thanks Kruger,

I hope your easter weekend was a good one.

I did find those links over the weekend myself and gave them ago without a good result. Although I could change the block size within Backup exec up to 64kb but it still refuses to work (using Symantec driver)

I did notice that when i use the normal HP drivers the default block size is set to 32kb with no option to change it (its all greyed out) im going to give HP support a call and see if they can point me in the right direction to change the block size of the tape drive so i can start testing.

I'm very close to sending it to a data recovery place...

Just dropped the tape into a data recovery center :(

Thank you for your continual effort in trying to get this problem sorted for me. It is much appreciated.

Yes, Kroll Ontrack data recovery were the only place that could recover the data they have locations all over the world. If you are close to one I would highly recommend using them.
