visual studio 2008 crashes when I try to add a reference

I have been using visual studio 2008 for over a year with no problems.  Then the other day I needed to add a reference to a project, and when I did it immediately crashed.  I tried creating a new project and adding a reference, and it also immediately crashes.   No message, just shuts down.

I have uninstalled vs 2008 and service pack 1.  reinstalled both.  I still get the error...

Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

was it with the same reference all the time?
or different?
Might be the problem with the reference u add?
Or did u install any addin/toolkit for vs2008?

I didn't install any addins for VS2008.

I don't even get as far as selecting a reference.  As soon as I select "Add Reference"  it crashes Visual Studio.

Can you share event log (if any). Also try starting in safemode
Devenv.exe /SafeMode
