Cannot connect to my Windowx XP SP# with remote desktop

All computers on LAN running either Windows XP SP3 or Windows 7 SP. All of them have remote desktop turned on and all of them work except for one. It's a Windows XP Prof, when I try to connect from outside the LAN or when I'm on the LAN it acts like it's going to connect but then it gives you a message I keep getting this message "the problem can occur if the computer is running a version of Windows that is earlier than Windows Vista, or if the remote computer is not configured to support server authentication"

It has nothing to do with Vista. I have a SBS2003 on this LAN, none of my other PCs have this problem. I did install teamviewer and I got that to work. I uninstalled teamviewer.

any suggestions????

here are other things that I have tried already none worked:

ive read a few other posts, and have had issues with xp,vista, and 7 collaborating on lan. easiest solution i found was using hamachi, third party client, see if that resolves the problem.

Double check that the remote administration is enabled on that system and that if the firewall is turned on, that an exemption for RDP is set.
I think that this may be being caused by some windows services not running. It would be helpful if you could post a list of the windows services on the faulty computer with their current status and their startup type. You can find the services in services.msc, which can be run from the command line or run dialog box.
Did you make sure and add the users that can connect to the machine under the "select remote users" button? If you don't add the user names that can connect, it won't allow you to connect. try adding "everyone" and then try it again.
You may have installed an update to the RDP services.
Make sure you are using the latest rdp client to connect. The latest one used on vista/windows 7/optional on windows xp uses stricter authentication/encryption.
open remote desktop connection click options and go to advanced.
there should be a few options for authentication verification.

abelenkiy,
Thanks but it's a Windows XP computer

Sounds like one of two things to me.

1) check the DNS server on the SBS 2003.  Make sure there are no duplicates for the ip address or the workstaion name.  Delete any dupicates or bad entries if found.  restart DNS and do ipconfig /flushdns on the workstations.

2) Could be a video driver issue on the host computer.  Check this thread that discusses a registry edit.  If that doesn't work try a newer or older video driver. http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=67147&st=80
Jsarinana,

I want to make a few suggestions.   simple ones that I recommend you "TRY" and then report your finding back here.

First tell me-

is this client member of SBS domain?
if client is member, was it joined with connectcomputer wizard?
is the client getting dhcp from same source as other machines or statically configured?
is the client at least visible in RWW?

from a workstation on the same network please test the following:

Start>Run>mstsc

in RDP input workstations ip address
see if you can connect  - yes? no?

if you cannot connect from same local network machine

login to host you cannot connect from and right click my computer > properties
on the remote tab make sure remote adminstration is enabled
also see if specific users are allowed to connect remotely or if everyone is.  Make sure everyone is.

now -

turn off /disable all firewalls

now test? success ?  Fail ?

give this a try and let me know what you find before we get into next steps.
bitMASTERSDate thanks,
I did find a bad dns in forward and deleted, are you instucting to restart DNS on the sever?
I will go do a ipconfig /flushdns on the workstation.
Yes, restart DNS service.
That won't effect any users right?
No, it won't.  Did you also check the reverse dns?  Make sure the entry for the workstation name has the correct ip address.
There is no need to restart DNS, runnin ipconfig /flushdns should clear the entry from your system.
The deletion of the record you did, would address the issue on the host the next time they check for the information about this record.

The stopping/starting restarting of the DNS service, will impact the users slightly if there are no other DNS servers defined. I.e. for the 30 seconds it takes for DNS to stop and start, new lookups will not be answered.

BitMasters,
Thanks, yes I understand the restarting of DNS service. It should not effect anyone unless they are in the process of logging in. The only reason I asked about it is because of the strange douplicate, this has never happen to me before.

All is well now...
Thanks everyone,
I did look at my DNS at the very first but did not catch it, thanks again BitMaster
