What's a very good video player for windows?

Hi,

I would like people's recommendations for a great video player for windows.  I'm willing to pay for it, as I've used the free ones and they have significant shortcomings.

I've used VLC and it handles a ton of formats, and has variable speed playback. Those are things I want in my player.  However, it has no granularity when scrubbing.  If I have a 30+ minute video and I want to jump forward a little, I can't.  Wherever I press it either jumps backwards or forwards by a significant margin, like a few minutes. It also loses the picture quality when you jump. I really hate that.  Additionally, there is no keyboard control.

Quicktime is great at scrubbing and has high quality playback, but doesn't have variable speed playback and only handles a small number of file formats. Windows Media Player has good quality but also has lots of annoying features (press too quickly on the pause button and it takes the video out of full screen).

The features I really want are:

High quality playback
Smooth scrubbing
Variable speed play
Large variety of recognized video formats
Ability to control playback via keyboard

Recommendations?

Thanks!

try mpc (media player classic) maybe it fit your needs, and it's free:

KLite Codec pack comes with all the codecs and MPC like jvfernandez mentioned. I use it.

VLC is exactly what you need. Download the latest version and then do the following:

1.) Go to Tools
2.) Select Preferences
3.) Select Hot Keys

At this point you can configure different commands/functions and map them to various keys and key combos. I'm going to go over fast forwarding

4.) Map "+" to Faster. Make sure that "+" is not mapped to anything else.
5.) Map "-" to slower. Make sure that "-" is not mapped to anything else.

Let me know how that goes for you.

Quicktime supports variable playback, including jog/shuttle control. Just use CTRL+K

Unfortnately Quicktime doesnt support a lot of formats. You can try KMPlayer. Its free and their feature list is impressive.
