external usb dvdrw in compaq proliant ml350 server

I am trying to boot with usb dvd drive to install windows2003 os in my ml350server,but my usb drive is not detected by the ml350srver.I tried in bios but couldn't see any options.pls suggest.

If the unit is a g4 or newer, it should be able to boot from it.  You may have to specifically tell it to do so however.  Try opening the boot menu during the post.  I think it is F10 though the post should list the keys that matter early on after the memory test (F2 for setup, F10 for boot options, and F12 for boot from network I believe).

Anyway, the boot menu should list a USB option.  If not, it may also be that the USB drive you are using is not the sort that can be used for bootable media.  It is rare but some optical drives are not configured to be bootable.

It should be g4 or older than g4 as the server in approx5+years old PIII CPU.The external dvd drive is samsung slim combodrive.regards giri

A P-3 based system is definitely older than g4.  It may not support booting from USB devices in the BIOS.  Have you ever booted from a USB device before?

When you start the server, during the POST it should display several F-key options.  Is there one to show boot options?  If so, press the associated F-key (typically F10) during the POST with the USB device connected and see if ther eis an option to boot from USB.
