Compaq Presario F700 very slow boot

So I have this laptop that takes a long time to boot.  It stuck in BIOS screen for 2 minutes.  Finally it gets to Windows but takes a long time.

This is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 1900MHz CPU with 2GB RAM.  Also I noticed the fan spins constantly on very high RPM and very noisy.
BIOS version is the latest F.08

Any suggestions guys?

Sounds like the hard drive. Go in the BIOS and I believe there is a hard drive test utility to check it.

Quick test passed.  Executing the Compehensive test now.  30% complete.  Will report soon.
Alternatively, you could boot to a SpinRite boot disc or HDD Regenerator and test the hard drive.

BIOS Diagnostics should be good enough.  40% Comprehensive test completed now.
It could still be the HD even though it passes. If there is still a long delay on startup the best way to find the cause is to remove devices that could be the cause like any USB devices, HD or CD drive.
As you remove them, test it to see if there is still an extended delay on the boot screen before moving on.

Good idea.  I will try removing the HD and see if boot speed increases.

As for fan spins constantly on very high RPM and very noisy.  Could that be the same problem the HD?
Are you sure it is the fan? If it is I am guessing that the BIOS starts the fan then initiates other devices while waiting for it to spin up but it gets delayed so the fan spins up faster than normal. That's what we are hoping anyway.
Yes, it is the fan.  100% sure.   Spins on high RPM constantly.
OK Test 100% complete now.
Quick - Pass
Comprehensive - Pass
S.M.A.R.T. - Pass

do you periodically clean your computer with certain utilities? Also, is the fan damaged at all? One way to test it is to shut down your comp. then take the fan and spin it with your finger, if it doesn't spin easily or makes noise, then the fan is probably damaged, or just needs some cleaning.
Its stuck for 2 min right after

'Video BIOS shadowed' line and before

'Fixed Disk 0: FUJITSU MHY2120BH'

That's a good indication of the slow HD initialization and issues with HD.  Correct?

Yes it is but it could also be the CD.
True.  I removed the HD and now it boots fast into 'Operating System not found'.  Looks like a HD is a culpit.

Hmm..  You are right!  It boots fast without the CD-ROM.  I put HD back in..  I didn't think the CD-ROM drive could cause that issue.  Wow!

It happens sometimes. The Cd goes bad and can interfere with the communication from the hard drive. You still have to replace the CD to be 100% sure but I would say the problem is solved.
You mean the CD/DVD-ROM drive right?  I think I can live without it for now:-)

I wonder could that be a driver.
Thank you again!!
Yes the CD/DVD-ROM has to be replaced. The Windows driver won't even be loaded until much later.
Got it.  Thank you again!!
