Try this.

Open registry, type regedit in the elevated command prompt.

Navigate to:
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.xlsx\OpenWithList" -under this, delete the string whose value=Notepad.exe (will of the form "somestring REG_SZ NOTEPAD.exe").

Then, Delete the key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.xlsx\UserChoice".

Log off and log in again. This will disassociate .xlsx files from notepad.exe and will also restore the icon for the files.

I hope this helps,

Shreedhar,

I follow all the steps. Problem is that even though I delete those values, it keeps coming back. Perhaps I did not "log off" ? and "log in" again.

After I delete those values, how do I log off to make the changes stay ?

Thanks.

How do I go to Run ?

Just restart the system after making the changes.

If what you mean is log out of the system and reboot the computer after making the change, I did that. But the line REG_SZ NOTEPAD kept coming back after I reboot the computer. The .xlsx icon was not restored. When I click it, the file invokes Note Pad again.

Then when I go back to registery, that line REG_SZ NOTEPAD reappear.

What do I do now ?

Thanks

The press the OK.

This should change the association

There is no Microsoft Excel icon in the Under Recommended Program panel.

Furthermore, the line REG_SZ  NOTEPAD.EXE keeps reappearing no matter what I do....shut down computer, reboot. Then once the .XLSX file is clicked, Note Pad is invoked, and that line reappears.

It seems that I am doing the wrong thing in deleting that line. he key UserChoice does go away and does not appear again.

Please advise.

Thanks

As Microsoft Excel is not installed. Which application you use for excel files?

I have Exel ( may be 2003 or so version ), and can always read other Exel files sent to me. But the problem seems to be I cannot delete that SZ NOTEPAD>EXE line. I can delete the UserChoice key.

If Excel is installed then Microsoft Excel icon should be there Under Recommended Program panel or Other programs.

Hi Shree,

I have download the converter program from that link already.

Now I thought  I have finally eliminated the string REG_SZ NOTEPAD.EXE and the key UserChoice ...for sure.

But then I download a XLSX file to a folder, it is automatically formatted as a Note Pad file, If I click that icon, garbage Note Pad will appear. I immediately go back to registery.... the string REG_SZ NOTEPAD.EXE  appears again !!

Help please ! What's going on ?
