Create backup administrator for an application server

Need a little help here -

We have an SBS domain with 2 application servers (server 2003)  I want to give administrator access to an individual for just one of those app servers (not the whole domain) so he can manage the backup.  Is that possible and how do I accomplish?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

There is a user group called Backup operators, I think it is a local user group on the domain controller, add them in there and you should find that this is what you are after.

Sorry this is the official function of the backup operators group

Backup Operators
Members of this group can back up and restore all files on domain controllers in the domain, regardless of their own individual permissions on those files. Backup Operators can also log on to domain controllers and shut them down. This group has no default members. Because this group has significant power on domain controllers, add users with caution.
Back up files and directories; Allow log on locally; Restore files and directories; Shut down the system.

If the app server is not a domain controller you should be safe to use this user. It will act as above but on ly on the App server you specify. Sorry I was a little hasty in my first reply. If you right click my computer and choose manage and then go to local users and groups you will find a group called backup operators. Add the team memebr in there and you should see this achieve your goal. The reason they need shut down rights is depending what they have restored they may well need to do a reboot to finish the job.

Thanks for your help IntegrityOffice.  The backup operators group did give the limited access to the server I wanted but the software we use for backup (Retrospect) apparently will not run with any login that does not have administrator privileges to the entire domain.  Makes sense... since you need access to everything in order to back it up.  Still, I wish I could figure a way to let someone look at the backups (make sure they are successful) w/o giving them the power to actually change anything...

Anyone?

Hi, Glad I was of help, I am sure that retrospec will act like Symantec and allow you to email a full log ( depending the extent of the detail, we use summary only unless there is a problem ) to an individual user. Thats how I do mine. I make them check through the backup and then if they are not happy they let me or another backup admin know and I then look into it further.

I was unable to accomplish setting up a backup admin.  The backup program requires admin rights to run and I couldn't set up any email alerts because we have port 25 closed for other reasons (our email setup is complicated.

Thanks for what you were able to suggest!
