How to login to a Cisco Switch

Hi, my office has a Cisco Catalyst 3550. I am trying to login to this but the previous administrator did not leave the login details. I am not a cisco expert so I am unsure of where to go from here. Can anyone advise me on what to do to be able to get into this switch?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I would really try to contact the previous admin for the login info.  But if you must you can follow this guide to reset the hardware back to the factory defaults.
If you know the ip address you can try to Telnet or SSH to that IP. If you cant connect then you can try connecting to the console port with a console cable.

Either way you will need to know or guess the password to access. If you dont you will need to reboot the switch and reset the password. here is a guide on doing this with the 3550
No reason to reset the hardware back to defaults follow the above guide to reset the password. You configs will stay the same.

You can get into the switch a couple of different ways. One way is with a Cisco Blue Serial to what looks like an Ethernet connection. Plug into the back of the switch in the console port and use a program called Putty to connect. Putty is free to download. Like hyper terminal. Also if the switch has the web interface turned on, you can go to a browser and connect right to it with its IP address.
