Getting SMTP mail transfer to work with AT&T is, in my experience, darn near impossible for casual users.  I don't consider myself a fool*, but it took me two days to get SMTP transfer working with Thunderbird, and I'm still not sure how I did it.  There is a complicated set of non-standard settings necessary to make it work.

Best of luck -- you'll probably need it.  A better alternative may be to shift to your local cable provider's cheapest tier; their SMTP settings are almost always normal.
