Windows 7 vpn

What do I need to get a vpn connection going in windows 7??
A lot of information but unsure what is right or wrong.  Will the free vpn in windows 7 work with either a symantec firewall or a netgear fvs318??  Tried turning off autotuning still no go.
Will the free one work with anything other than a server running 2008 r2?
Is there a free vpn client that will run on windows 7 that will work with a symantec 360, netgear fvs318, or a watchguard 5120??
Is anyone for sure that anything works with windows 7 as a vpn??
I need a low cost way to connect back into the network please only answers that you know will work not something you read will work.  I have seen plenty of stuff out there that say this will work and then I had problems with.

No. W7 IPSec VPN uses a new IKE protocol (IKEv2), which is better, but not widely implemented. PPTP and L2TP/IPSec kinds of VPN might work, but that depends on the VPN device, and has issues with NAT when done on client and server side.

I haven't checked for all of them. The Symantec is (or at least has been) very, ehm, proprietary. But your best free guess is to try ShrewSoft VPN ( The site has a lot of tutorials for all different VPN devices, which are really short but very useful.
