Text indent problem, Flash CS4, Actionscript3

Ok, not trying to do anything fancy but it's not working right.

I have some text on the stage. I want to indent some bullets. I set the spacing (or set a margin) and it looks like it's working. The text indents just like I want it to.

But when I click off of the text box the text snaps back to align left. No indent. It's just gone.

I tested the movie to make sure and yep, it's gone.

But when I select the text again (double click on the text) the indent is there. Click off and it's gone again.

What the heck??

Hm...  Maybe you could create a simple sample and upload it here so that we can take a better look on what's going on???

This example does not exhibit the problem you are mentioning...

CyanBlue
var txt:TextField = new TextField();
txt.multiline = true;
txt.htmlText = "Hello<ul><li>Apple</li><li>Orange</li><li>Tomato</li></ul>Bye";
addChild(txt);

Open in new window

CyanBlue,

Like I said, I'm not doing anything complex. I'm not even trying to do it in Actionscript.

I just mentioned that because I figured it may be that text can't be done this way if I set the publishing to Actionscript 3?

All I'm doing is setting the text on the stage and trying to get it to indent using the properties panel. Every tutorial I've looked at says it should work. I would think that it would work.

But it's not.

And I have very little hair left to pull out...

MH

I tried what you said on the stage with manually placed textField, and I don't see it happening...  :(

Do me a favor and create a new FLA with one textField with your settings, and see if it still does what you are experiencing... and upload that FLA file in that case...
I'll have to check it tomorrow morning cuz it's 1:30 already...  So, don't touch your hair until I or somebody else help you on that...  ;)

Big Business Goals? Which KPIs Will Help You

The most successful MSPs rely on metrics – known as key performance indicators (KPIs) – for making informed decisions that help their businesses thrive, rather than just survive. This eBook provides an overview of the most important KPIs used by top MSPs.

I agree maybe your idea of indenting is not the same as mine or CBs.
In CS4 you have the spacing and margins options, that's about all the indenting you can get without manually manipulating it.

If I do a simple field the way CyanBlue suggests it works fine. And yes, I was using spacing as blue-genie suggests. I just called it indenting out of habit I guess.

But as soon as I add in a couple different colors it stops working. I have two fonts and two colors. I guess that just blows it up?

I take you do everything manually on the stage for creating/styling the textField...  Copy that textField, paste it into a new FLA and see if the problem still exists...  If it does, please upload that new FLA file so that we can take a look...  It's whole lot faster that way...  ;)

CyanBlue,

Can't upload the file. It's a confidential-type thing.

I tried it in a new FLA and it still did it. At first I thought it was because I copied the text from PowerPoint but it did the same thing after I pasted from notepad. The weird thing is, it was working right up until the time I added the links. Then it broke.

I may have to just use white text on white background to get it to line up.

really weird though.

Even weirder is that when I did an undo to back out the links the formatting was still gone. I guess it's just the combination of too many different things going on in the text box?

CyanBlueCommented:
That could be cuz I remember experiencing some wonky behaviors when I manually work with the textFields on the stage...

You don't have to upload anything confidential...  I don't even want to see any of those...  Just create a new FLA and use ipsum text to duplicate the problem and upload it...  That's all I want so that I know what you are doing cuz I currently don't...

ok, I can do that. hopefully I can recreate it.

with my luck something about lorem ipsum will trigger it to work...

Ok, here it is. And just like before the formatting held until I put in the links. I left it with the links so you you can see what I did.

Thanks,

It seems like it is one of those bugs in Flash where mixed indent value along with the HREF does something weird...  I have messed with it for a bit, but I don't find a way to solve the problem unless I separate the textField into two...
Don't know if it is something you can use or not, but I think I have done it this way long time ago to get away with this problem...

CyanBlue,

Yeah, I hate trying to bust them into two. That means the leading is up to my eye and I hate that. I'd rather use the white on white text.

Thanks for looking though. I guess this is just one of those can't be done things...

Best,
MH

Yeah...  As much as I love Flash, I hate it the same for this sort of quirky stuff...  There are tons of known/unknown issues from the older versions that overlooked when they upgrade just because either they don't think that's not significant or whatever else...  :(

Hope you didn't lose too much hair with this...  ;)
