Produce graph with optimum node positioning from adjacency matrix

Hi all,

I have an adjacency matrix which at the moment I am then drawing a graph, with nodes and edges, in a pencil--this is laborious. Anyone know how to do this in Octave (or MATLAB)? Hopefully something would take my matrix and produce a nice graph, with optimally positioned nodes. (I found gplot, however this needs to coordinates of the nodes.)

If not, anyone know of any free software that can do this?

Cheers,
James

If you have Bioinformatics toolbox you can use biograph function.

Another option is to install free Graphviz (http://www.graphviz.org/) and use "MATLAB - GraphViz interface" from File Exchange:
