MP4 Video Problems

I'm having problems playing a video that i retrieved from a DVR. The video has a .mp4 extension but i can not get it to play with any application/codec. I've tried the Free Codec Pack, i've tried VLC player all of them say invalid video format.

is there anything that scan the video and dertimne the videos format and or how it can be played?

That is exactly the program i was looking for, unfortuanatly it couldn't determine the video type either :(

whats more likely, this video is in some other format then any video player can play? or the video got corrupted when it was pulled from the DVR?

OK - CCTV codecs are almost universally a PIA to decrypt -  likely to be H.264 with an MP4 container but within that pretty much anything goes.
If you can upload a short clip of stuff you don't mind being in the public domain happy to see if there's an easy fix for you.  Nothing more than a few MB though!
