VMware and Altiris Server

My client has a large VMware environment and we want to use Semsntec Altiris Server to provision and update VM machines. Is it possible to configure theVM Template Process to connect/integrate with Altiris.

hi

what exactly do you want the VMtemplate to do. you want to have the altris server as the destination or do you want to deploy altris agents on the VMs and hook them up to the altris server.

1.Are you using vCenter and VMware Update Manager in your environment to manage ESX Hosts ?
2.What type of updates are you planning to provision for the VMs ?

We are using VCenter in our environment but we are looking at Altris to deploy altris agents on the VMs and hook them up to the Altiris server. We have a very large environment with over 1000+ VMs. We are continuously provisioning them with  security patches or various other updates (OS, antivirus, etc...). Our internal debate centers around the efficiency of updating a "template" and provisioning through VMware Update Manager or using Altiris (after basaeline update) to push out the patches.... We are primarily a LINUX shop with a modest number of Windows and Solaris VMs.

I do not know a lot about Altris but does it support Linux Distros in addition to Windows OS.

Hi

As patching the vms directly will involve more network bandwidth, you can have your baseline image updated with all patches periodically with altris agent installed on it and converted to template and deployed using Vcenter and when the images get deployed they can hook up to the altris server for most recent updates.

This will reduce the amount of data that needs to be going back and forth from your altris server.

Coming to usage of vmware update manager, it only supports applying OS level patches and does not include support for Anti-virus, hence would suggest using ALTRIS server for applying the regular patches.

Most antivirus vendors require a Agent/Server concept to keep track of licensing and count of Computers that fetch updates.

Thank You everyone but I have opted to use Red Hatt Satellite Server to provision my VM machines since we are primarily a LINUX shop.
