Sharepoint WSS 3.0: Alerts grab text from wrong column in custom list

I have alerts on set up for a custom list. However when an alert email is sent, the text of the alert is from the text of the custom list's 1st column. I would like to have the alarm grab the text from the 4th column. Can this be done?

Thanks in advance!

The text of the alert comes from field Title which is dedicated mandatory field in any list.
You can trick th following:
1. Rename Title to the name of your 4th column.
2. Change the order of columns in List Settings.

Hi,
I suppose I can trick the system by making the desired 4th column the only mandatory list. I will try this as soon as I can, as our intranet (wtih Sharepoint) is currently down! Thanks for the suggestion...I'll keep you posted.

Hi my sharepoint site is back up now. Since my list is a custom list, it did no have a "title" column. I did make the 4th column as the only mandatory column.....but it did not work. When I set an alert, and the email was transmitted, the title of the alert was once again from the 1st  (wrong) column....let me konw what else I may try. Thanks

I also did experiment and changed the name of the 4th column to "title"...but no luck when I experimented with the alert -- the alert still grabs the text from the 1st column.

All colums have an internal and external name. You can only rename the external name.
Every list (eg. custom list) has a column called Title by default. You cannot delete this column but you can rename the external name and you can move this column position on edit display or new item dialog boxes.

You should create a new list, then rename title to column which you want in the 4. column.
And create other columns and change the column order, rename columns which you want.
