Can't open multiple files anymore (.bmps, .jpgs, .txt, .htmls, etc...etc...)

For some reason, I can't seem to open multiple files anymore. I was always able to in the past, but as of a day ago, I can't anymore. I didn't install or change anything. For example, I liked opening .bmps with MS Paint, so I would highlight like 10 .bmps, right click and choose "Open". Then there would be 10 MS Paint programs open. Or I would highlight 10 text files, and open them with notepad or wordpad, then there would be 10 notepads open. But now when I highlight more than one file, and choose open, nothing happens. Nothing opens. Any help would be appreciated.
I'm running a dual core AMD with Windows XP SP2

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Open up registry editor (regedit.exe). Go to key
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers. Export the key using File

Delete all values in key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
except for Open With, WinZip and WinRAR (if those are there; if WinZip and WinRAR are not there, don't worry about it).

Close Regedit, reboot, and try again.  If it STILL doesn't work, then reopen regedit and delete the following keys:

HKEY CLASSES ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
HKEY CLASSES ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
HKEY CLASSES ROOT\Drive\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
HKEY CLASSES ROOT\Folder\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

Then, again, close regedit and reboot.

Excellent! Just doing that first part of what you suggested worked. THANK YOU....Can you I ask you one quick thing? Why did it happen where I couldn't open up more than one file? This has happened to me in the past, and I was never able to find out why. Thank you again.

oh, Should I accept the solution now? I wasn't sure if you would still be able to answer back after I accepted or not.
I'm not sure why it happened, sorry... just how to solve.  If the solution worked for you, then yes, it would be appropriate for you to "accept" the solution.  Thanks for posting back to let us know!  (And yes, people can still add to the thread after you've "accepted").
