Can not access or ping microsoft.com or windows update

Hello

One of our computers contracted a bunch of infections.  I have been able to remove most of the infections but something is still lingering or damaged and I really need some help.  Here are the facts:

- I'm running Windows XP SP3.
- I cannot access Windows updates.  When I go to Windows updates from the start menus I get this error:
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
- I can access microsoft.com from a Web browser
- If I click on "Get windows updates" link on the microsoft.com homepage I eventually get this error:
       [Error number: 0x80072EFF]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.
- I cannot ping microsoft.com or windowsupdate.microsoft.com
- I have issues accessing othe rmicrosoft sites (community, technet) from this computer
- I do not have issues connecting to any other Web sites or pinging them.  I can ping Google.com and yahoo.com as well as access them through a Web browser.
- I cannot access the sames Microsoft sites in Internet Explorer or Firefox, changing browser does not provide a work around.
- I have uninstalled and reinstalled Internet Explorer 8 several times.  I have also reset all the IE setting and restored defaults.

I have run the following programs/fixes - all of which are not returning any infections:

AVG Free
Spybot S&D
Malwarebytes
Super AntiSpyware
PCTools Spyware Doctor
OneCare
Microsoft MRT
Windows Defender
Smitfraud
Combofix
DialAFix
Symantec Conficker removal tool
Symantec Mydoom removal tool
LSP Fix

I got a reply on 74.125.113.104 but not 10.57.53.23 - are you sure the second one is a valid IP?
Yes, I was verifying something.

You need to look into DNS to see if you can fix that.

Try

ipconfig /flushdns.
I have already done that several times.
For a work-around, but not true fix, you can try a hosts file entry:

Post Combofix's logfile

Also run Hitmanpro + write down anything detected

I just figured out you can't ping microsoft.com or any other Microsoft site from anywhere:

I just tested it from network-tools.com

Ping microsoft.com
Ping 207.46.197.32

Can you access anti virus sites like norton, mc afee?
Sorry missed that you ran symantec removal tools :(
OK I ran TDsskiller and it returned the following:

To finalize removal of infection and avoid loosing of data program will
reboot your PC now.
Close all programs and choose Y to restart or N to continue

I pressed Y and rebooted the PC.  Re-ran tdsskiller and got the same result.  Rebooted and the same happened a third time.  I then logged in using the PCs local admin account and ran it and the same thing happened.

So it looks like I still have something in the iaStor.sys file but how do I remove it if tdsskiller can't?
Can you remove that drive and slave it in another machine?
If not booting to a live cd like Knoppix will do the following

If so:
Delete iastor.sys from system32\drivers and system32\dllcache
Then copy iastor.sys from host machine into both locations

>Has worked for me before but get an image backup first!
I put the drive in an external case.  Hooked it up to another XP machine.  Deleted the iastor.sys file from the drive and copied one from another machine.  Ran a virus scan on the drive, came up clean.

Put it back in the system, booted up.  Ran TDSSKiller again and got the same message about iastor.sys being infected.

It sounds like you just need to backup the data and reload the OS. you have been working with some of the best in this field and still don't have a fix. It will save you a lot of time.
Trustwise - I am starting to lean in that direction.  There are just a lot of programs I have to reinstall on the machine so I am willing to spend anothe 2 hours on it before I pull the plug.  I am "one of the best" on the field as well and rarely have to ask questioon but this one is just rediculous.  From what I am reading this rootkit is undetectable by pretty much everything out there.
Here is the virustotal result:  Im not sure what it means but as an FYI the file size is the same.  The previous file size was 300K and the file size from the other system is around 830 K.

Also, I ran the Kaspersky online scanner last night before I went to bed.  When I woke up the scanner completed and found nothing.  However, the status of the network cable said a cable was unplugged but there was network cable plugged into it.  I had to reboot the computer.
Additionally I tried to download Web cureit to that machine and the download kept failing.  I was able to download it to another machine with out problems.
I'm wondering if the NIC card is going bad or the infection has done something to the systems network interface.
Here is what Web Cureit Found: (quick scan)

Try the following:
Open up IE and under Internet Options click on >Connections>Click on LAN settings, and make sure no box is checked there. Normally spyware puts proxy information there. Clear any boxes there and try again.
The computer was infect with a TDSS rootkit and Cureit was able to detect and clean the rest of the system from all infections.  I can now access all Microsoft Web sites and the computer is running great.
To be on the safe side can you download a new TdssKiller and run it.
If it detects it again, the system is not clean yet :(

Hi again,
could you possibly attach Cureit's logfile with those cleansed threats
I dont think I am still infected...Why do you think otherwise.
Here is the TDSS Killer:
