Internet explorer 8 black menubar, black toolbar, black favorites bar etc.

Afer reinsalling windows xp to bare disk and updating windows with a load of security patches - patched up to date except for sp3. XP is installed to SP2 level.  I updated IE6 to IE8.  Now IE 8 launches with a black menubar, a black toolbar, etc.  The Ttitle bar looks normal.  Just below the titlebar, the URL line looks ok - we have an undorned desktop set to Windows Clssic style.  How do we get the normal menubar, toolbar, etc.?

Acknowledging msgs from Johnb6767 and optoma. I can't get to the affected machine for a feww days, so hang tight.  I'll post results when I get them later this - might be Friday before I'll have info to comment.
