How to properly fine tune and optimize a MySQL server?

I have a new Ubuntu 64 bits server which should be used for MySQL only. The version of MySQL is 5.1.37.

I would like to know what is the best place to learn on how fine tune this server to receive the most number of connection while being fast and effective.

There is a package in Ubuntu called mysqltunner which is a PERL script written for that purprose.

Can anyone make me any good recommendations regarding this issue?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I have the book, thanks.

What I would like to know is can I optimize the server to handle more connections?

The settings and books on this topic are some what subjective. One needs to experiment with the server to achieve maximum optimization.
