SQL works in Navicat but not PHP

I have the following php, which fails with the error I've included below it.  I'm executing it using @mysql_query($sql).  When I run the sql in Navicat it works fine.  Any one know why it fails in php?
$sql="BEGIN;
	insert into login (username, password, email) values('".$match[1]."','".$match[2]."','".$match[3]."');
	insert into person(loginid, sex)values(LAST_INSERT_ID(),'".$match[4]."');
	COMMIT;";

Resulting sql and error is:

 BEGIN; insert into login (username, password, email) values('test_demo73','password','test73@test.com'); insert into person(loginid, sex)values(LAST_INSERT_ID(),'M'); COMMIT;You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '; insert into login (username, password, email) values('test_demo73','password' at line 1

mysql_query() will not allow multi-statements in one query. Try creating an array of sql commend and iterate over the array executing one query at a time:

$sql=array("BEGIN"
        ,"insert into login (username, password, email) values('".$match[1]."','".$match[2]."','".$match[3]."')"
        ,"insert into person(loginid, sex)values(LAST_INSERT_ID(),'".$match[4]."')"
        ,"COMMIT");
foreach($sql as $qry)
{
	mysql_query($qry) or die(myslq_error());
}
