Local Directory missing from Menu
I have recently had a Cisco CME + CUE installed by someone else (Cisco 2821), the local directory listing on the Phones (7942G) were showing, no it is missing all together. All the phones are missing the "Local Directory" option. I did not setup the phone system, and am still new to this products. If you need information, versions to help resolve, please let me know what I need to do to provide the right info. I tried diabling and re-enabling the directory in the telephone-service and rebooted the phone, still no joy. I think the CME is 4.1

Hi Bfason, I tried all this last night. I reset all phones, reloaded the router. in the running config, there is none of what you mentioned above, I did try these commands to disabled and re-enable yesterday and today, but no entry for 'directory first-name-last' exists. See below config.

I managed to try enable with last-name-first as you suggested, shows in the config now. Seems buggy to me if it only accepts one way. See below updated. I reset the 1 phone, still no directory. If I need to reset all and reload PBX then I will have to do this tonight.

the "directory last-name-first" just changes it from the default of first name first and is how I see most set up.
Were there any changes implemented at the time it disappeared?
Do other services such as voiceview work correctly?
Also http has to be enabled on the router
It would be in your show run as
ip http server
It might help if you could post the whole router config.

At the phone go to the setting menu>device configuration>http configuration and see what the setting is for Directories URL. If this is blank then the phones cnf file doesn't have the right info. If this is the case then we can look at what it takes to trouble shoot that.
Other than that I'm running short on possible causes.

I think you might be more on the right path if we look at what the phones are downloading. Belowis the config on one of the 7942 phones which a copied off the web interface of the phone. As you can see, the Directories URL: [empty]

Ok, the cnf.xml files are stored on the flash of the router. I can't remember the exact name of it but it should be something like SEP<MacAddress>.cnf.xml and see if if contains the directories info. If not then check the default for the phone which is something like XMLDefault7942.cnf.xml. If the default file contains the right info but the phone one doesn't then you can delete the phone specific one and it will regnerate on the next connection.
We'll address troubleshooting the default if it doesn't contain the correct info in another post.

thanks, I found it on the flash, how do I look at the contents to give you the required feedback? tftp?
You can download via tftp or can look at it on the router with the "more" command.

I don't have access to a cme router so I haven't tested it but you should be able to browse to the url from your pc. I'm not exactly sure of the output but against a full callmanager you get the xml output which at least let you know that the router is processing http requests. Since the url in the cnf.xml is correct then it appears that the router is not responding to http requests for the phone therefore the service doesn't appear when you press the button.
ASKER
looks like it's not the router, it is the phone config not pulling down. reason I came to this conclusion is that I checked on the reception phone which is a 7961, the local directory shows and the config show the correct path. I also have 2 x 7965 phones with the same problem as the 7942 phones of not showing the diretory and the config is not pulling onto the phone. I think we can troubleshoot as to why these phone models are not pulling down their config.
Theres a show commond that is along the lines of "show Ip telephony-server tftp" this will show all the tftp files being served by the service.
you should see your XMLDefaul742.cnf.xml listed followed by an Alias for each phones "sep<macaddress>.cnf.xml".
It may be that we need to regenerate the default files. You can do this by deleting the defaul cnf file then under telephony-service issue the :" create cnf-files" command.

I think the command is 'sh telephony-service tftp'. See list below. I do not see any Alias's created for the default on the 7942 Model. Is this the problem here? I have issued the command 'create cnf-file' which it then creates, but there is still no listing of this file under tftp. I tried to do a copy from Flash: to tftp: but [Permission denied]. Strange that is is not listed under tftp but the defaults are all under the Flash://tis/XMLDefaul79XXX .cnf.xml

In this case your phone is pulling info from SEPDefault.cnf. You can do the More command on that file to determine if the directories URL is correct in this file.
Actually I may be wrong, with the newer phones, it might be using the XMLDefault.cnf.xml
ASKER
Looks like this file is blacnk. When I do a more command to the file, it shows nothing. the file is all in uppercase SEPDEFAULT.cnf - I tried loading the XMLDefault7942.cnf.xml file into the tftp service and created an alias of SEPXXXXXX.cnf.xml file for one of the phones. Reset phone and now I see the Local Directory. Looks as though the SEPDEFAULT.cnf file is the problem here.
ASKER
or the system is not setup to read the default, whether the XMLDefault.cnf.xml or the SEPDEFAULT.cnf

I think what you need is a SEPdefault.cnf.xml. I'm sorry I haven't dealt with cme in quite some time and don't have one I can connect to for reference so I'm really pulling from memory here.
Would you mind making an alias named SEPDefault.cnf.xml of the SEPDefault7942.cnf.xml and then reloading one of the other phones?

I'm sorry but I should have thought of this sooner. If we want to see which files it is looking for all we have to do is debug tftp on the router to know for sure. On the router do the following at the enable prompt.
term mon
debug tftp packets
then reboot one of the non working phones. You will be able to see which files where requested by the phone.

it first tries to pull the SEP file which it now cannot find, them moves onto the XNLDefault.cnf.xml file - very strange. I am starting to think there is something wron on the tftp side as it cannot find the files I created.
I ran the command 'tftp-server flash:/its/XMLDefault7942. cnf.xml alias SEPDefault.cnf.xml' and I did see any change under sh telephone-service tftp-bindings

managed to get all the SEPXXXX.cnf.xml files loaded and alias'ed to get things moving along after several attempts and inconsitent updates, does not solve the problem. I am wondering now because I am getting inconsistencies in the tftp and listing files, got a couple of write errors when trying to create cnf-file. I think maybe the flash may be faulty?

If I do a 'sh ephone 7942' it does show the correct phones.
Did you put in the type under each ephone, would look something like this
ephone 1
mac-address 3037.A617.6EC7
username "Jennifer" password null
button 1:18
night-service bell
Type 7942
I think the problem is that cme doesn't know it's a 7942.
Do a show ephone registered and you should see data about the phone that can help identify the model.

BTW I leave on vacation in a few hours and will not be able to reply for several days. I do think setting the type will resolve the issue

bfason, I tested one phone as you suggested, looks like it pulls the correct flash:/its/XMLDefault7942. cnf.xml file!!! - I will test all phones this weekend and let you. Have a great vacation!!

I have specified all phone correct type, wrote to mem, reloaded. Reset all phones, everything working 100% - thanks very much, must have bee specifiying the phone model CME did not know as you specified. Or I assume I could have put the required information in the XMLDefault.cnf.cml file as all phones were pulling this information with the type's being specified. Thanks again!!

very knowledgeable....
telephony-service
directory last-name-first
If it has the following then it's disabled
telephony-service
no directory service
If it is enabled then you may want to reset all the phones, You can do this by going to the telephony-service prompt and using the "reset all" command.
If you still don't have the service I would restart the router and then reset phones once more.
Hope this helps
