Mergefields don't populate in Word 2007 header

I have a Word 2007 document set up with merge fields in the header and body of the document.
When I run the merge, the fields in the document are populated but the fields in the header are not.

So if I put the same field in the header and the body, I get the following when I run the merge:

Header: { MERGEFIELD "booking__BOOK_ID" }
Body: 61814-CD

Is there a setting in Word that will enable me to populate the mergefields in a header as well as the body?

Hi CIPD,

There is no setting for that.

Fields in headers and footers do not update automatically. Only date, pagenum fields etc. You would need a macro to go into the header or footer and update the fields.

Also, look here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q211629/

This lists a couple of alternatives such as forcing pagination/repagination of the document and switching to print preview.
