One user always logs on with a temporary user profile.

I have one user on our domain that seems to have a problem.  Whenever he logs on to ANY machine on our network, he only gets logged on with a temporary profile and I can't figure out why!! This problem surfaced when he got a new Window 7 laptop which I set up and gave to him....he called an hour later to say that when he logged on, all his settings had gone.  I have tried to log him on to a Windows 7 laptop and a Windows XP laptop, same result.....temporary profile and I can't change the type (roaming /local etc).

On his current laptop, no problem...he logs on using a local account (all our users use Local) and his settings stay, even when he logs out and back in again.

Things I have noticed:

When I logged back onto my PC after he had tried (and failed), his name does not show up in the 'Profiles stored on this computer' list....this is the same on ALL PC's I have tried....it's like he doesn't exist!

I made a couple of desktop changes when logged on as him (icons etc), these DO get loaded when he logs onto another PC, but the profile still shows as TEMP.

His settings ARE being populated to the profile folder on the Domain Controller.

Why is it always a TEMP profile guys?!

I found the problem....

He was a member of the Domian Guests group, which was created by the guy who set up our network.  Becuase of this, he wasn't able to use a 'proper' profile!!

Thanks for your suggestions though.

This is a strange problem. Windows create temporary profile in case there is problem with OS or unexpected changes or anything os never expected. Did you try creating any other profile? are u storing this profile on server? Is there anything set in active directory?

I can log in using any other profile and yes, the profile is stored on the server.

Can you expand on this please as I don't know what you mean:

'Is there anything set in active directory?'

Also check this reg key and see if he's there. May need to remove him and start from scratch.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

No, he doesn't appear there either.  The problem isn't machine specific...it's a problem with his account on our Domain, as he gets a temporary user profile on any machine he logs into.

some options
Check the AD for his profile entries
Using built in admin, create a new user and log in. If that works fix his user profile
help and support/search/fix user profile

I'll check this as soon as I get back, can you just expand on 'check the AD for his profile entries' please?

If you go to AD and click user account and go to properties, you will find a profile tab. Is anything set there?
