Is it possible to link a SharePoint document library to a network share drive?

I know it is possible to map a network drive to a SharePoint document library or site, but want to know if ther reverse can be done. (i.e. link network drive to SP doc lib)?  We have a group of users who maintain word docs on a drive and do not want to upload all of them into SharePoint.

Not exactly sure I understand the question, but I'll give it a try.

You can place a shortcut file in your network share that points to the SharePoint document library via the UNC path (\\server\sites\somesite\doclib).

Thanks for the response, but that is not exactly what I was looking to do. I guess I didn't phrase the question very well. We currently do map drives to SharePoint doc libs or sites exactly the way you describe. This allow the users to access data in SharePoint from Win Explorer, but the data resides in the content DB for that SharePoint site. What the user wants to do in the reverse, access data from SharePoint when the data physically resides on the file system File server(s). Is that possible? (I'm guessing no because of SharePoint data structure in the content DBs.

Thanks for the clarification.

So basically, you want to use SharePoint but instead of having the documents stored in the SQL Content DB, you want the documents stored in a network file share.

This is call using a external BLOB. Its really a SQL feature that SP can leverage.
