FRAPS fps while in game

Hey all, I have been using FRAPS for a while, but I'm getting a little frustrated with it. While recording when playing Team Fortress 2 or Modern Warfare 2, my fps drops and becomes erratic. I've tweaked different settings, like recording at half size, and locking the framerate at 35 or 40, but it still slows me down to the point where I can't play normally. So my question is: What hardware upgrade would increase my in-game fps while recording with FRAPS?

Windows 7 Pro 32 bit
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz
3 GB RAM (2.5 GB usable)
Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT -> 196.75 drivers
Creative SB X-Fi

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Are you sure FRAPS is causing the slowdown? Does it run fine in the same location on the same levels without FRAPS?

Check your RAM usage during gameplay to see if there is still excess capacity, otherwise increasing that may help.

It is recommended that you do not record at the full resolution or 60 FPS.
It should help if you are recording the video to a different hard drive then the game is running from.

1) Check space on your hard drive - FRAPS needs loads - make sure it's well defragged.
2) Your 9600 is pretty underpowered (for MW2 anyway) and adding FRAPS won't help, although you've got DX10 support the comparative lack of vertex and raster shading on your card will pull it down with the newer game.
3) Despite only having 3GB RAM and presumably 512 VRAM in the 9600 you might see an improvement in switchnig to a 64bit OS
