Windows 2008 Hyper-V virtualization and Server 2000 with SQL 2000

I have a blade server with Windows 2008 on it. It's rebuilt and part of a settlement. I have a new business need and I'm going to be using it for several tasks.

One important piece is that I have an older application that requires SQL 2000. So the question is can I run Windows 2000 server with SQL 2000 as a virtualized server in Windows 2008? I'm pretty sure 2000 server will be ok but I'm not able to find any supporting documents that say SQL 2000 will run in that environment

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I think you will have to try it. It will work but not be supported by microsoft. Also if you want to use VSS / DPM backups of that hyper-v VM it will have to suspend the machine to take a snapshot / backup rather than server 2003 / sql 2005 which could back up while it is on.

This doc clearly states microsofts support position on SQL 2000

See above for supported guest OS's. Cant see any reason why SQL 2000 wont work once its fully service packed.

Thanks, that's exactly what I'm looking for. The backups are an issue but this is such a old, customized application that we'll have to make due.

Thanks!
