ColdFusion Scheduled Task - Security Question

I'd like to use the CF administrator to schedule a weekly task to do some database cleanup.  Is there a way I can prevent anyone from running this public page other than making the name obscure as no one will see it on a web site?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

A very simple approach might be to have the CF task pass some sort of url variable.  Something unguessable like a UUID or hashed secret (ie hash(secretValue) ...) Then have the cfm page check the value, and only proceed if it is correct. Otherwise, log the attempt and abort or redirect to some other page.

Hi aqx,
OK, I was also thinking along those lines.  Just wasn't sure if the was "up to par".  In addition, I do you think it's a good idea checking for the HTTP_REFERER= as I assume it will be blank if not itiated from a browser.

Well, obviously it's not totally hack proof. You'd need something more robust for that.  But it's far better than just obscuring the file name.

Checking it the referrer certainly couldn't hurt. Just keep in mind it can be easily faked (or missing altogether). So don't depend on that value alone.
