Does a voicemail message class change when it is forwarded?

My company is preparing to migrate from GroupWise to Exchange 2010. We are a financial company and fall under SEC/FINRA regulations.

We would like to use Exchange 2010 UM for our voicemail and have purchased Symantec Enterprise Vault for compliance.

Symantec Enterprise Vault can exclude certain email from being archived based on the message class. I know the message class for voicemail from Exchange UM is different and can be excluded, something like IPM.Note.Voicemail.

Here is my problem: I don't know what happens when that email with the voicemail message class is forwarded. Does it retain the class? Does it get a new one?

We are trying to make sure email with attached voicemail does not get archived.

Thank You.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I am not sure if it retains the class, probably not but keep in mind that EV will not be compatible with Exchange 2010 until EV version 9 comes out.  Currently is beta and should be out shortly.

Easy way to find out, send yourself an email and forward it.  See if it keeps the IPM the same

You can also use an add-on product, the Automatic Classification Engine that allows you to create rules based on attachments and allow you to clasify them before they get archived/journaled.  ACE will allow you to set a retention policy which will then allow you to create a zero day retention for these emails so they'll be deleted before they get into vault.

Hope this helps

paulsolov,
Thank you for the input. The only problem is we don't have anything set up in dev to test what the IPM does on a forwarded voicemail. We are still on GroupWise (ugh).

Check with the guys that will be doing the Exchange install, they should be able to test in their lab or production environment if you're having a vendor do the install

It looks like a forwarded voicemail is turned into an email with an attachment.
