I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The problem may well be a Malware or virus infection.
In assuming you really are running Windows Me, you may well find that MalwareBytes anti-malware, although excellent, will not run on this 10 year old operate system!
Instead you could try (free) Superantispyware.
Download, then update before running it:

You could also try Stinger.  It should run on WinMe, but please note that it is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection.  Also i recommend NOT disabling your System Restore, as stated here.   If there's an infection in the _Restore folder we can overcome that later...
