Hi, I am running VMWare workstation 7 and using the Backtrack4 vm guest for security testing tools. I'm able to get unity to work with my CentOS vmware guest and my Ubuntu vmware guest, but can't seem to get it to work with BackTrack4. <br />

The error message I get is: <br />

&nbsp; The virtual machine cannot enter Unity mode because:<br />
&nbsp; - The guest operating system's resolution cannot be changed.<br />
&nbsp; Check that Unity is supported for this guest operating system and that the latest version of &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; VMware Tools is installed.<br />

I've tried reinstalling vmware tools and that didn't help. <br />

Here is uname for bt4: Linux bt 2.6.30.9 #1 SMP Tue Dec 1 21:51:08 EST 2009 i686 GNU/Linux<br />

How to get VMWare Unity working for Backtrack4

VMware, a software company founded in 1998,  was one of the first commercially successful companies to offer x86 virtualization. The storage company EMC purchased VMware in 1994. Dell Technologies acquired EMC in 2016. VMware’s parent company is now Dell Technologies.

VMware has many software products that run on desktops, Microsoft Windows, Linux, and macOS, which allows the virtualizing of the x86 architecture.  Its enterprise software hypervisor for servers, VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi), is a bare-metal hypervisor that runs directly on the server hardware and does not require an additional underlying operating system.

The Linux operating system, in all its flavors, has its own share of security flaws that allow intrusions, but there are various mechanisms by which these flaws can be removed, generally divided into two parts: authentication and access control. Authentication is responsible for ensuring that a user requesting access to the system is really the user with the account, while access control is responsible for controlling which resources each account has access to and what kind of access is permitted.
