Running Windows 2008 and Windows 2008 R2 as domain controllers

Hi we currently have a 7 server network which is mainly Windows 2003 32bit. We have 3 Windows 2003 32 bit domain controllers, 1 Windows 2003 R2 64 bit exchange server, 1 Windows 2008 32 bit file and application server, 1 Windows 2003 R2 32 bit ISA server and 1 Windows 2003 R2 32 bit WSUS/Sophos other services server. We are upgrading in the summer to full 2008 and inserting a new Windows 2008 R2 server. Now 1 of the Domain controllers is an old server so this will be decommissioned. I would like to do a straight upgrade on the 2 existing Windows 2003 domain controllers to Windows 2008 32 bit and then add the new Windows 2008 R2 server into the domain. Is this possible to mix Windows 2008 32 bit and Windows 2008 R2 64 bit domain controllers together?

Yes, that is possible.

You will however need to keep the forest domain functional level at level of the oldest domain controller.

So if you have a Windows Server 2003 domain controller you cannot go beyond the 2003 functional level.

So if you have both 2008 and 2008 R2 domain controller and no 2003 domain controller then you cannot go beyond 2008 functional level.

So am I right in thinking that you can have Windows 7 group policy running ok with a Windows 2008 Domain controller but with a Windows 2008 RS domain controller you have the more advanced level of group policy, like direct access etc.

Well yes, you can create GPO objects that will be applied to Windows 7 machines. They will not be supported on older machines.

Direct Access is more tricky to configure as you need two public Subsequent addresses for this to work. It's easier to deploy if you do this through GPO.
