removing carriage return in data extraction

I'm getting what I think is a carriage return in my result set.  When I spool the results to text, there's a vertical rectangular character in the text file, and when I import this dataset into Excel it will cut off the row and go to the next row where the character appears.  I've tried the return and trim functions but they don't seem to work.  can someone help?  thanks.
